Our Reading Schemes

At Hinguar Primary School we use a variety of different strategies to teach reading across the school. These different strategies are outlined below:

Read, Write, Inc – We use this synthetic phonic approach to teach phonics in the Nursery to Year 2. Children learn:

  • Grapheme – phoneme correspondences and segment words for spelling.
  • How to blend sounds for reading and segment words for spelling.
  • Apply skills and knowledge to read age-appropriate stories featuring the grapheme – phoneme correspondences they have learned.

This programme is in addition to the sessions for Literacy and has 5 key principles – (pupil) participation, positive teaching (praise), purpose (clarity of), pace and passion (energetic teaching and learning).

Oxford Reading Tree –  For children working on the early stages of reading we use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme for individual readers. These fun character stories are perfect for early reading with familiar settings, real-life scenarios and humorous illustrations to hook children into reading. They are designed to enable children to practise decoding skills and start to develop broad rich language skills. Each book is aligned to Letters and Sounds and includes inside cover notes for adults to offer support in decoding, tackling tricky works and developing children's language comprehension.

Pocket Reads – When children  become independent readers they are able to experience  attractive fiction and non-fiction texts that capture a child’s imagination. Each book is levelled to ensure gradual progression. There are notes for adults in each book to encourage reading at home and within the classroom.

Collins Big Cat Guided Reading Scheme – To support our teaching of reading through guided reading opportunities we use Collins Big Cat fiction and non fiction books.  These books are colour coded and range from wordless books that tell stories or give information through pictures and develop understanding about how stories and information books work through to books which offer more complex, underlying themes to give opportunities for children to understand causes and points of view.

Mrs. Willis, our Early Years Foundation Stage Manager holds an annual Read, Write, Inc (RWI) workshop for parents. Below is the powerpoint used in explaining how we use Read, Write, Inc (RWI) to help teach phonics at Hinguar. For further information please contact Mrs. Willis via the school office.
